Brief: I was tasked in 2023 with creating a 'fresh' book cover that would encapsulate the essence or key themes of the book 'Cloud Atlas'. Cloud Atlas follows the story of six characters, who are all linked through different time periods and locations around the world.
Solution
To link the book cover design to the main themes of reincarnation and past lives within the book, I took inspiration from spirituality and the iconography of connection and chose to use six interlocking circles to represent the six characters.

Experimenting
After researching, I experimented with various different ways objects and mediums that express connection, and tie in all the themes in the book, for example: string, chain links, circles, tree roots, Newton's Cradle, etc.
Developing
Once it was decided that the circle idea was the strongest design, I made multiple different variations to decide which worked best. I have selected a few to show below.
